either permanently or temporarily. It is usually measured in kilobytes,
megabytes, or gigabytes.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface; an industry-standard
hardware/software system for microprocessor control of musical instruments
and devices. It defines a protocol for the interchange of musical information
between computers, digital musical instruments, and sound boards.
Mirror Site
An FTP site on the Internet that contains the
same information held by another site, so that demand on the original
site is distributed.
Multimedia
A synthesis of digital media types combining
text, graphics, audio, animation, and video. Interactivity is a feature
of most multimedia, which is also referred to as digital media, new media,
or hypermedia.
Multiplatform

on more than one hardware platform. Such software is sometimes referred
to as "crossplatform," particularly if it has been ported to

it was created.
Navigation
The means by which a user explores and controls
graphic, text, audio, and video elements in a multimedia program.

Normalize

of amplitude to their greatest allowable levels, raising the amplitude
of softer sounds proportionally.
OCR
Optical Character Recognition; software used
with a scanner to convert printed pages into text files.
Palette
In digital imagery, the number of predefined

PDF
Portable Document Format; a document type created

with a specified color or intensity level. Picture resolution is measured
by the number of pixels used to create an image.
Plug-in
A program that is an extension of another program,
one that enhances the utility of the original application. Plug-ins for
browsers are one way to allow enhanced media types to be employed.
Portability
The ability to use the same software on different
hardware systems or across platforms. A high degree of portability reduces
the need to modify programs for delivery on different hardware.
Post
Jargon for post-production, the part of a video
or multimedia production performed in a studio after live filming and
the construction of basic images.
Prosumer
Describes high-tech production gear with output
quality that falls between professional and consumer. It is used with
