Icon
Any graphic symbol that represents an object,
function, or task. When the cursor appears on top of an icon, a mouse
click will generally initiate some action.
Imagemap
A single image that contains multiple hypertext
links.
Interactivity
Reciprocal communication between a user and a
playback device or digital media system.
Interface
The means by which a computer user gives instructions
and receives information from a computer. It can also mean the device
that connects two pieces of hardware, such as the link between computer
processor and peripherals.
Internet
The interconnection of many small networks at
campuses, research institutions, corporations and military installations
sharing a common TCP/IP addressing interface. Internet activities include
e-mail, conducting group discussions over Usenet, accessing databases,
and surfing Web documents, or pages that are linked together.
Intranet
This use of a dedicated file server running TCP/IP
in a local area network (LAN) to provide HTML documents and other files
that are accessed by clients using a Web browser as their interface.
Intuitive
Describes "user-friendly" software
that instinctively provides options or information the user needs.
IP Address
Internet Protocol Address; a unique number that
identifies a specific Internet server.
ISDN
Integrated Services Digital Network; an international
digital telecommunications standard that accommodates voice, data, and
signaling and brings high bandwidth to the microcomputer desktop.
Java
A cross-platform, object-oriented programming
language developed by Sun Microsystems. It can be used to create whole
applications, however, its primary contribution to the Web has been in
the form of Java applets, self-contained, mini-executable programs.
Javascript
A client-side scripting language developed by
Netscape that adds interactivity and conditional behavior to Web pages.
It has little in common with Java.
JPEG
A lossy compression algorithm developed by the
Joint Photographic Experts Group used frequently to prepare Web graphics.
JPEG is most efficient as compressing images with gradations in tone and
no sharp edge contrasts. Photographic images are typically best saved
in JPEG format.
Kiosk
A freestanding, interactive multimedia system,
that typically has a touch screen for input.
Line Art
Images that contain only black and white information
with no grayscale or blended tones.
Loop
The repeated display of a series of still frames,
an audio file, a video segment, or the execution of a series of instructions
without interruption.
